COVID‐19 and individual performance in global virtual teams: The role of self‐regulation and individual cultural value orientations

Abstract: Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, global virtual teams (GVTs) have become increasingly important. Drawing on conservation of resources theory and self-regulation theory, we examined the mechanism and process underlying individuals' performance in GVTs in this specific situation. We posit that the local severity of the pandemic has a negative effect on individuals' performance in GVTs and that self-regulation functions as a coping mechanism in times of pandemic-related ambient stress, reducing its negat… Show more

“…If this is the case, psychopathy might be less harmful in remote work environments than in person. At the same time, in line with trait activation theory, the destructive nature of psychopathy might be accelerated when those individuals (i.e., psychopathic individuals working remotely) encounter nonwork and work-based intrusions (e.g., Leroy et al, 2021), poor communication (e.g., Shockley et al, 2021), and/or otherwise have a high uncertainty avoidance orientation (e.g., Schlaegel et al, 2023), among other factors. Future research that explores such possibilities seems particularly relevant as the role of remote works appears to be permanent for many.…”

“…Building on the notions of information asymmetry and the costs of signaling from signaling theory, we argue that newcomers prone to focusing on the future—those who are future-oriented (Bearden et al, 2006)—are more likely to engage in proactive networking. Future orientation is a forward-looking temporal value, which both guides decision making (Lin et al, 2019) and influences self-regulation (Schlaegel et al, 2023). In the business context, individuals with higher levels of future orientation are more likely to take a holistic approach toward the future and the past and focus on long-term relationships with others (e.g., with clients and suppliers), even if it means making significant short-term investments without immediate benefits (e.g., Lee & Dawes, 2005; Lumpkin et al, 2010; Ryu et al, 2007).…”

“…To further elucidate, embodied co-presence not only enriches the user experience by fostering a sense of community and collaboration in virtual settings but also serves as a critical factor in the seamless integration of digital processes [29,30]. This sense of presence and togetherness, despite geographical separations, is instrumental in overcoming the inherent challenges of virtual teamwork, such as communication barriers and feelings of isolation [31]. Moreover, the degree to which individuals feel co-present in digital environments can significantly influence their engagement levels, decision-making processes, and overall productivity within virtualized business operations [32].…”
