“…A survey conducted by the EBAA showed a similar pattern of improvement in the tissue distribution volume 2 months after lockdown ( 8 ). In a study of the Eversight eye bank, Ballouz et al ( 9 ) compared the number of available corneal tissues and corneal transplant surgeries in an 18-month period from July 2020 to December 2021 (when elective surgeries were resumed) to the same period in 2018 and 2019. The number of surgeries requiring corneal tissue significantly increased in this period compared to the pre-pandemic period, and the number of suitable tissues was similar in both periods of comparison.…”

“…Therefore, though the number of procured tissue increased during this period it was not enough to meet the needs due to the increased demand. This shortage in tissue was handled through an increase in imported tissues ( 9 ). Ongoing efforts to improve the rates of donation of corneal tissue post-pandemic will continue to address the increasing demand for corneal transplantation worldwide.…”

“…In Japan, corneal transplantation relies on imported corneas from US. Post-mortem testing for COVID-19 had been discontinued in the U.S. 18 , so it would be even more useful to use preservation solution to check for infection in such cases. In addition, we consider that using donor corneal preservation fluid to check for infection is simpler and safer than using nasopharyngeal swab fluid of the deceased patient, including the reduced risk of secondary infection of the collector.…”

“…Although corneal transplant procedures were back to normal levels, there was a shortage of suitable corneal tissue. The discontinuation of post-mortem testing of COVID-19 in the U.S. has made it possible to obtain many imported corneas 18 .…”
