COVID-19 and cardiovascular diseases

Abstract: Highlights COVID-19 poses an additional burden on pre-existing cardiovascular diseases. Inflammation-related hypercoagulability can be dramatic. Monitor electrocardiograms, electrolytes, coagulation, and congestion in severe COVID-19. Discontinuing renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors is not supported by evidence and could be detrimental.

“…AF is one of the common chronic comorbidities found in patient deaths due to COVID-19. 48 In a large propensity score matched study of COVID-19 patients aged over 50 years of age, AF significantly increased short-term mortality and thromboembolic events. 49 Risk factors for the development of cardiac arrhythmias are: 1.…”

“…In fact, it aggravates the disease burden by worsening the cardiac involvement and by increasing the risk of end stage renal disease (ESRD) and stroke [2]. Further, since many mechanisms can intervene in the determination of BP levels [45], hypertension might be difficult to control in Fabry disease due to the underlying proinflammatory environment, similar to what is widely observed in the presence of low-grade systemic inflammation of other sources [46][47][48][49][50].…”

“…Second, the significance of this paper is heightened due to the impact of COVID-19 on mortality rates. Both COVID-19 and heat-related mortality impact similar groups, such as the elderly and those with cardiovascular and respiratory disease [53]. Thus, the distinction between deaths attributable to heat and COVID-19 is likely to be problematic.…”
