COVID-19 and cardiovascular complications – the preliminary results of the LATE-COVID study

Abstract: IntroductionCoronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) may affect many organs and may be responsible for numerous complications including cardiovascular problems.Material and methodsWe analysed consecutive patients (n=51) admitted to the cardiology department between 1st October 2020 and 31st January 2021 due to symptoms, which might have reflected cardiovascular complications following COVID-19.ResultsThe complications after Covid-19 appeared after 1-4 months after disease recovery.ConclusionsDiabetes, elevated leve… Show more

“…Study results also indicate at least neutral effect of statins on the risk of development and the course of COVID-19. In contrast, the number of studies indicating their very important role, improving the prognosis not only in the course of COVID-19, but also after recovery, in the socalled Long-Covid period (> 12 weeks after recovery), is increasing [402]. This is associated with the mechanisms of action of statins, not only their anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties, stabilising atherosclerotic plaque (especially during the so-called cytokine storm), but also inhibition of the main coronavirus protease, reduction of the availability of lipid structural components of the virus envelope, degradation of so-called viral lipid rafts, or inhibition of its replication [403][404][405].…”

“…However, despite the great success of conventional approaches to therapeutics, an enormous disease burden remains. Moreover, in many highly developed countries we may observe a plateau, or even a slight reduction in life expectancy in recent years, which may only be partly attributable to the coronavirus pandemic [ 4 , 5 ].…”
