COVID-19: An Emerging Culprit of Inflammatory Arthritis

Abstract: Arthralgia is one of the most common symptoms that occur in patients with COVID-19. About 15% of patients present with arthralgia at some point. Although COVID-19 seems to attack the musculoskeletal system (muscles and joints) in its infective and postinfective stage causing inflammatory arthritis, not much is known about the rheumatic manifestations of this infection. In this case series of 5 patients, we discuss the occurrence of bilaterally symmetrical polyarthritis in patients, previously free from any rhe… Show more

“…One common complication has been reported in inflammatory reactive arthritis based on the hypothesis of the proinflammatory markers (IL-6 and TNF- α ) being released in alveolar and musculoskeletal inflammation [ 61 ]. Similar to RA, one common post-COVID-19 complication is an early onset of arthritis that can be cured by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.…”

“…Mukarram et al reported five patients who developed inflammatory arthritis following COVID-19 infection. All patients developed polyarthritis showing symmetrical distribution, including large and small (distal and proximal interphalangeal) joints, with musculoskeletal ultrasound scans showing evidence of symmetrical synovitis [10]. Ghauri et al described a case of a 34-year-old male who developed reactive arthritis (right knee) 10 days after being diagnosed with COVID-19 [11].…”
