COVID-19: A brief overview on the role of Vitamins specifically Vitamin C as immune modulators and in prevention and treatment of SARS-Cov-2 infections

Abstract: In December 2019 a pandemic of acute respiratory distress syndromes occurs in Wuhan, china, the early evidence suggests this may be due to exposure to local sea foods in china. The pathogen was isolated from Chinese patients and designated as severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 (SARS-COV-2). COVID-19 mainly affects lungs by producing respiratory predominant symptoms like fever, cough, flu and dyspnea. As SARS-Cov-2 firstly find a mechanism to escape the immune system of humans and animals followed… Show more

“…25 Vitamins C and E are found to be helpful in cytokine storms and cellular injury which are the outcomes of SARS-COV-2 and other viral infections. Vitamins C and E act as strong antioxidants and help to scavenge the ROS, which is why Jan et al 26 regarded these vitamins as helpful in SARS-Cov-2 and other viral infections. The reduced level of these vitamins observed in this study is owing to their role in scavenging ROS as they are being used up in the process.…”

“…[36,37,38] Due to these actions, Vitamin C has a potential in the management of COVID-19 patients. [39,40,41] Vitamin C supplementation has shown beneficial results in infections and sepsis. As extreme COVID-19 can also induce acute respiration distress syndrome (ARDS) and sepsis, excessive doses of vitamin C supplementation may also contribute to ameliorating inflammation in patients with COVID-19.…”
