Cover Feature: Salt Effects on Hydrophobic Solvation: Is the Observed Salt Specificity the Result of Excluded Volume Effects or Water Mediated Ion‐Hydrophobe Association? (ChemPhysChem 6/2020)
Abstract:The Cover Feature depicts the effects of salt addition on hydrophobic solvation as represented by the micellization of 1,2‐hexanediol amphiphile. The addition of salt affects the free energy of cavitation and the packing density of the aqueous solvent. The net result of these two effects is a decrease in the solubility of the hydrophobic tail of 1,2‐hexanediol. This is why the micellization of 1,2‐hexanediol is enhanced in saline solutions relative to pure water. More information can be found in the Article by… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
