Th is study aimed to evaluate knowledge about and the usage and importance of aquatic vascular plants (AVPs) in the production of handicrafts by communities on the north coast of the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil. Th e snowball technique was employed to locate people who use and have knowledge regarding the use of AVPs for handicrafts. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and guided tours with 35 interviewees who were involved in artisanal activity at the time of the study. Th e data were analyzed using the importance value (IV) index and the consensus value for the forms of use (CMU). Th e Spearman correlation test (rs) was employed to determine the correlations of each social variable with the knowledge variables, and Mann-Whitney U tests to verify whether men and women exhibited diff erences in knowledge. Th e interviewees cited 16 AVPs that were employed in 17 types of handicrafts, among which the four main species were Schoenoplectus californicus, Typha domingensis, T. latifolia and Androtrichum giganteum. Interviewee age, residence time on site and time working with handicrafts were the main social parameters that described the level of knowledge and use of AVPs. Th ese AVPs refl ect cultural knowledge and complement family incomes.

Along the Peruvian north coast, many towns depend on fishing for subsistence. The adoption of technological innovations has facilitated the extraction of marine resources from the Pacific Ocean by Peruvian fishermen in recent years. However, some artisanal fishermen continue to rely on traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) to create sea vessels using botanical resources. This is the case of the fishing community of Huanchaco, a beachside town, where a reed locally known as totora (Schoenoplectus californicus) is cultivated in sunken gardens and is principally used to construct caballitos de totora, reed sea craft. This reed is also used for other purposes that benefit the fishing community economically. The objective of this article is to highlight the dynamic quality of TEK by describing the persistence and change in use of totora by the fishing community of Huanchaco. Participant observation techniques and individual interviews were conducted with 40 members of the fishing community. Results show that they are currently using totora for three different purposes: the construction of sea craft, which facilitates the catching of edible marine resources for subsistence and sale, and the sale of reed mats and souvenirs for additional income. Evidence from the recent past and the historical and pre-Hispanic periods suggests that some aspects of the technology of reed vessel construction have persisted whereas others have been modified. The addition of souvenirs and a reduction in mat production have also been identified. These changes in TEK highlight its dynamic quality, and are likely in response to economic and technological changes influenced by processes of globalization.

ResumenEl humedal Jaboque se ubica en medio de la ciudad de Bogotá y es uno de los remanentes de mayor tamaño de la red de humedales y lagos que existió en la Sabana de Bogotá. En este estudio se hizo la caracterización florística de la vegetación en este humedal y en el parque La Florida y se determinaron los cambios en las coberturas vegetales ocurridos entre el 2004 y el 2016. Se encontraron 306 especies, 207 géneros y 91 familias. Las familias con mayor riqueza fueron Asteraceae, Cyperaceae, Myrtaceae, Solanaceae y Fabaceae. Con respecto a las coberturas vegetales evaluadas, se encontró que las más abundantes fueron el juncal Schoenoplectus californicus y el camalotal Bidens laevis. Este último fue el que más cambió, pues su área tuvo un aumento de 73,2 %. Las especies encontradas y los cambios de vegetación observados evidenciaron un leve mejoramiento en la transformación y la degradación ambiental provocados por la urbanización, la sedimentación y la contaminación de los cuerpos de agua y de las zonas terrestres en el área de estudio. © 2017. Floristic diversity and changes in land cover of the Jaboque wetland basin and La Florida Park (Bogotá, Colombia) AbstractThe Jaboque wetland is located inside the urban area of Bogotá and it represents one of the largest wetlands left in the Plateau of Bogotá. In this study we made the floristic characterization of the vegetation in this wetland and in La Florida Park. We determined the changes in the vegetation cover occurred between 2004 and 2016. We found 306 species, 207 genera and 91 families. The Asteraceae, Cyperaceae, Myrtaceae, Solanaceae and Fabaceae families were those with more species. The most abundant vegetation covers in 2016 were dominated by Schoenoplectus californicus and Bidens laevis, and this last species registered the most important change, as its area increased by 73,2%. These findings during the period under study evidenced a slight improvement in the transformation and environmental degradation caused by urbanization, sedimentation, and contamination of water bodies and terrestrial zones in the study area. © 2017.
