Covalent Organic Frameworks Linked by Amine Bonding for Concerted Electrochemical Reduction of CO2

Abstract: Amine-linked covalent organic frameworks (COFs) were synthesized by the reduction of parent imine-linked COFs by crystal-to-crystal transformation. The excellent chemical stability of these COFs in combination with the presence of a large amount of amine functional groups led to a robust and molecularly defined interface at the silver metal surface as an electrode for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2. The concerted operation of COF and the metal surface resulted in high conversion efficiency and excellent… Show more

“…Post‐synthetic transformation can change one linkage into another one that is difficult to prepare directly . Oxidation of an imine‐linked COF using hydrogen perchloride transformed the imine linkage into an amide connection, whereas reduction of the imine linkage using NaBH 4 resulted in an amine‐linked COF (Figure ) . Imine‐linked COFs were transformed into thioazole‐ and oxazole‐linked COFs by post‐synthetic exchange reactions with 2,5‐diaminobenzene‐1,4‐dithiol hydrochloride and 1,5‐diaminohydroquinone monomers, respectively (Figure ) .…”

“…This work exemplifies the use of a MOF to provide discrete active sites for catalysis and the electrolyte to confer secondary sphere interactions that influence reactivity. MOF and COF structures can also be utilized towards reactive environment engineering: COFs with amine linkages were recently synthesized as a thin film on top of catalytically active silver electrodes for CO 2 RR (Liu et al ). The presence of the COF film increased the selectivity towards CO production by facilitating the formation of a carbamate intermediate.…”
