Course Participation: An Active Learning Approach Employing Student Documentation

Abstract: Documenting student participation is not an easy task, for the professor or the student. The purpose of this article is to (1) offer an approach for getting students to take responsibility for documenting their level of course participation and (2) explore the active learning framework to teaching that might best support this approach to participation documentation. Student examples are offered as an illustration of what can transpire when students are required to be the center of their learning and must docum… Show more

“…Many studies use undergraduate students, which is acceptable for theoretical research [7]. A meta-analytic study on the use of college students in consumer research found that these subjects were slightly more homogeneous than non-student subjects [56]. However, the study concluded that the increased homogeneity of the subjects might not yield more powerful hypothesis tests, since the homogeneity reduces the variability and may simultaneously minimize the magnitude of the relationships [56].…”

However, the study concluded that the increased homogeneity of the subjects might not yield more powerful hypothesis tests, since the homogeneity reduces the variability and may simultaneously minimize the magnitude of the relationships [56]. Therefore, different groups of subjects in the studies compiled should be examined to determine the differences in the effect size, a prime use for the synthesis techniques in meta-analysis.…”

“…It is further suggested that even among students who do not personally participate in the SMG discussions, motivation should be enhanced because (1) these students were at least offered the opportunity to have a voice in the class process, and (2) the voices of other students should engender a view that students in general had a say in the class governance. Peterson (2001) stressed the importance of student-faculty interactions as a key component of the active learning model. As such, SMGs function properly only to the extent that students are comfortable voicing their opinions.…”
