Background The nature of the relationship between passion and courage and its influence on soccer performance has yet to be revealed. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine passion attributes (i.e. harmonious and obsessive inclinations) among male soccer players in relation to the level of courageous characteristics (i.e. mastery, determination, assertiveness, venturesome and sacrificial behaviour), other demographic and player characteristics. Methods Data were collected from 278 male soccer players aged 13–38 years (mean [M] = 17.42 ± 4.36) with the number of competitive soccer experiences ranging from 1–28 years (M = 7.51 ± 4.23 years). Participants had at least a year of experience in the sport of soccer completed the validated passion scale, sports courage scale and demographic form. Results Analyses revealed that soccer players with higher levels of total courage ( P < 0.001), have more experience in soccer ( P = 0.011), and their soccer level being professional ( P < 0.001) had a significantly higher score in harmonious passion. There was no significant difference in obsessive passion among different level of total courage ( P = 0.154). However, soccer players with more experience ( P = 0.011) and higher soccer level being professional ( P < 0.001) demonstrated a significant higher score in obsessive passion. Conclusion In conclusion, soccer players with higher harmonious and obsessive passionate attributes had higher courage (except for mastery). In addition, the courageous and passionate traits of the soccer players played meaningful roles in indicating individual and performance variables.

Background and Study Aim: This study aimed to determine whether athletic mental energy played a mediating role between wrestlers’ sports courage and attitudes toward wrestling. Material and Methods: The study developed an original theoretical model, which was tested using the Sobel test. The sample consisted of 247 wrestlers in the Freestyle and Greco-Roman Wrestling Leagues, U-23, 1. League, 2. League, and Stars Wrestling Leagues of the 2021-2022 Turkish Wrestling Federation. Participants were recruited using random sampling. Data were collected using a sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire, the Guttman Attitude Scale Towards Wrestling (GAS), the Sports Courage Scale-31 (SCS-31), and the Athletic Mental Energy Scale (AMES). Results: There was a positive correlation between attitudes toward wrestling and athletic mental energy. There was a positive correlation between athletic mental energy and sports courage. There was a positive correlation between attitudes toward wrestling and sports courage. Moreover, athletic mental energy played a fully mediating role between sports courage and attitudes toward wrestling Conclusions: The results confirmed the theoretical model. Authorities should inform wrestlers about the relationship between athletic mental energy, mental training, and sports courage.

ÖZ: Bu çalışmada, çeşitli akademik disiplinlerde yer alan 150 cesaret tanımının içerik analizini yapılarak cesaret kavramı incelenmiştir. Çalışmanın amacı, farklı yaklaşımları nedeniyle anlaşılması ve tanımlanması zor bir kavram olan cesaretin, net olmayan doğasını açıklığa kavuşturmaktır. Bu çalışmada, farklı cesaret tanımlarının kapsamlı bir içerik analizi yapılarak ve çok yönlü cesaret tanımlarının ortak özellikleri belirlenmiş, tanımlar farklı özelliklerine göre kategorize edilmiş, böylece cesaretin daha iyi anlaşılmasına katkıda bulunmak amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmanın bulguları, farklı disiplinlerde, cesaret üzerine araştırma yapan bilim insanlarına, karmaşık bir doğaya sahip olan cesaret kavramını, uygun bir anlam ve içerikte kullanmalarına katkı sağlayacaktır.
