“…Despite recent breakthroughs in the spawning of captive common snook broodstock (Ibarra-Castro et al, 2011;Neidig et al, 2000;Rhody et al, 2013;Rhody et al, 2014;Yanes-Roca et al, 2009) and advances in larval rearing protocols (Barón-Aguilar et al, 2013;Hauville, Main, et al, 2014;Hauville, Bell, et al, 2014;Ibarra-Castro et al, 2011;Rhody et al, 2010;Wittenrich et al, 2009), to date, there is still no established large scale production of this species for food or restocking. Reproductive bottlenecks of captive snook broodstock include the failure of females to ovulate without hormonal manipulation, reduced milt production in males and inconsistent supply of high quality eggs and larvae (Rhody et al, 2013;Rhody et al, 2014).…”

“…Because aquaculture of centropomid species is important throughout their range, some rearing experiments of C. parallelus and C. undecimalis have been carried out (Cerqueira 2002, Álvarez-Lajonchère et al 2004, Álvarez-Lajonchère & Tsuzuki 2009, Wittenrich et al 2009. However, information on development of early life stages for species of this family is scanty.…”

“…Environmental factors such as nutritional status (Izquierdo et al 2001) and stress (Schreck et al 2001) can cause plasticity in egg properties. In the wild, the larval bluegill growth has been shown to vary with zooplankton community composition (Wittenrich et al 2009), and generally increases with declining adult density (Rettig & Mittelbach 2002), increasing zooplankton abundance (Welker et al 1994), decreasing gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum) density (Oplinger et al 2013), and increasing temperature (Belk and Hales 1993). Such environmental effects may be important in determining the growth of larval bluegill in the wild but were likely obscured by the controlled conditions (i.e., similar temperature, food resources, and predation pressure) in our experimental mesocosms.…”
