Coupling of phytoplankton and detritus in a shallow, eutrophic lake (Lake Loosdrecht, The Netherlands)

Abstract: An oscillating steady state is described of phytoplankton, dominated by Prochlorothrix hollandica and Oscillatoria limnetica, and sestonic detritus in shallow, eutrophic Lake Loosdrecht (The Netherlands). A steady-state model for the coupling of the phytoplankton and detritus is discussed in relation to field and experimental data on phytoplankton growth and decomposition. According to model predictions, the phytoplankton to detritus ratio decreases hyperbolically at increasing phytoplankton growth rate and is… Show more

“…), carried out at the same time with the Hyperion and ALI image acquisition. It was assumed that the concentration of suspended matter is the sum of nonchlorophyllous and organic particles and the relationship by Gons et al (1992), where 1 mg m Ϫ3 chlorophyll is approximately equal to 0.07 mg L Ϫ1 of suspended matter, was used to estimate the C SM . The nonchlorophyllous suspended matter concentration was taken to be 2 mg L Ϫ1 , and a CDOM (400) ϭ 0.71 m Ϫ1 .…”

“…A total of nine lines were drawn across the northern basin of Lake Biwa at near-uniform intervals from north to south, and 28 sampling stations were designated, based on three fixed points (eastern shore, center of lake, western shore) located on these lines (except for line 17, which was based on four points). The method used to estimate the NPSS concentration using a monthly factor d (which represents the phytoplanktonic portion of the TSS), which is based on the method of Gons et al (1992), is explained in Appendix A of the Electronic supplementary material (ESM). In this study, we chose April as the beginning of the year, considering the vertical mixing regime and algae bloom outbreak.…”

“…Separating NAP from the TSS with laboratory analysis is impossible [72], so the approach of Gons et al [73] was employed to divide the TSS into NAP and phytoplankton suspended solids (PSS). As a result, it was assumed that the 1.0 mg m −3 Chla concentration approximately equaled 0.0687 g m −3 TSS.…”
