[1] A three-dimensional model of the California Current System (CCS) from 35°N to 48°N extending offshore to 134°W is coupled with a four-component trophic model. The model reproduces many conspicuous characteristics in the CCS, including: complex, filamentary, mesoscale surface features seen in the pigment and temperature from satellite imagery; wind-driven coastal upwelling at appropriate spatial and temporal scales; and the close correlation between prominent features seen in pigment and those in temperature observed by satellites (Abbott and Zion, 1985). Statistical estimates of the characteristic spatial scales of variability, as calculated from the coupled, nested model, agree with those previously estimated from satellite images (for both surface temperature and pigment Abbott, 1988, 1994)). Model estimates of the characteristic temporal scales of variability, from decorrelation times, agree with those previously estimated from satellite images. Typical model decorrelation times lie between 2 and 4 days, in agreement with calculations from earlier sequences of (Coastal Zone Color Scanner (CZCS) and advanced very high resolution radiometer (AVHRR)) satellite images Abbott, 1988, 1994).

A regional eddy-resolving primitive equation circulation model was used to simulate circulation on the southeastern Bering Sea (SEBS) shelf and basin. This model resolves the dominant observed mean currents, eddies and meanders in the region, and simultaneously includes both tidal and subtidal dynamics. Circulation, temperature and salinity fields for years 1995 and 1997 were hindcast, using daily wind and buoyancy flux estimates, and tidal forcing derived from a global model. This paper describes the development of the regional model, a comparison of model results with available Eulerian and Lagrangian data, a comparison of results between the two hindcast years, and a sensitivity analysis. Based on these hindcasts and sensitivity analyses, we suggest the following: 1) The Bering Slope Current (BSC) is a primary source of large (~100 km diameter) eddies in the SEBS basin. Smaller meanders are also formed along the 100 m isobath on the southeastern shelf, and along the 200 m isobath near the shelf break. 2) There is substantial interannual variability in the statistics of eddies within the basin, driven by variability in the strength of the ANSC. 3) The mean flow on the shelf is not strongly sensitive to changes in the imposed strength of the ANSC; rather, it is strongly sensitive to the local wind forcing. 4) Vertical mixing in the SEBS is strongly affected by both tidal and subtidal dynamics. Strongest mixing in the SEBS may in fact occur between the 100 and 400 m isobaths, near the Pribilof Islands, and in Unimak Pass.

This paper examines the energy sources for eddy variability in the Gulf of Alaska using a numerical model and a novel form of data assimilation referred to as spectral nudging. Spectral nudging is distinguished from conventional nudging by its ability to operate only on specified frequency and wavenumber bands; in the present case, only the subannual variability is nudged, and only on spatial scales of 100 km or more. By using this approach, the broad-brush aspects of the model's mean state are constrained to remain near the mean climatological conditions, while the simulated eddy field is determined by the model dynamics. Simulations of the North Pacific Ocean with a 0.25°horizontal resolution and spectral nudging have been previously shown to produce eddy fields that are significantly more energetic and more realistic than those produced by prognostic (i.e., not nudged) simulations. The analysis of the spectrally nudged model results undertaken here reveals the tendency of the circulation to be both baroclinically and barotropically unstable in different regions and to differing degrees. Along the north coast of the Gulf of Alaska, the simulation suggests that barotropic instability is more important overall as an energy source for eddies than is baroclinic instability. Along the east coast of the Gulf of Alaska, the simulation suggests that both baroclinic and barotropic instabilities are important. Although the overall energy transfer is from the mean state to the eddy field, there are regions of the model, particularly along the north coast of the Gulf of Alaska, where the transfer of energy is from the eddy field to the mean flow.
