Coupling Effects Between Tank Sloshing and Motions of a LNG Carrier

Abstract: Free liquid surfaces inside the cargo tanks of seagoing ships not only reduce the initial stability but also influence the sea-keeping characteristics, in particular roll motions. Due to the increasing demand of liquefied natural gas (LNG), the concept of offshore processing or receiving terminals will gain in importance. Since pipelines are not economic for long distances, LNG is transported by shuttle carriers from remote marine locations for onshore energy supply. The loading/unloading procedure of an avera… Show more

“…The importance of knowing bound long wave characteristics in the coast (wave height H LW and period T LW ) is evident for: (a) the correct assessment of coastal morphodynamics influenced by long-period oscillations (Roelvink and Stive, 1989;Baldock et al, 2007Baldock et al, , 2011; (b) harbour agitation (Bowers, 1977;Lee and Xing, 2007;Bellotti, 2007;Kofoed-Hansen et al, 2005); (c) the performance diagnosis of carrier moorings (van der Molen, 2006;Naciri et al, 2006;Clauss et al, 2010) and (d) the adequate design of Wave Energy Converters (WEC) (Muliawan et al, 2013).…”

“…Gaillarde et al [6] published experimental results of the SALT JIP [7] on the coupling between liquid motion in tanks and vessel motion. Clauss et al [8] conducted experiments for a 138,000m 3 LNG with four membrane tanks and a numerical model was also established by WAMIT [9] in the frequency domain. The focus of the study is the influence of sloshing on the surge and roll motions of the LNG.…”
