Coupling between two inlets: Observation and modeling

Abstract: [1] The resonance coupling between two adjacent inlets is investigated. Field evidence of this natural phenomenon is found for two elongated inlets in the region of Ciutadella, Menorca Island, in the Western Mediterranean (Ciutadella and Platja Gran). To illustrate the fundamental features of the problem, analytical solutions for two rectangular inlets with constant depth are constructed and analyzed. The theoretical results mimic well the field data and demonstrate the resonance coupling characteristics of th… Show more

“…Porto Colom, Santa Ponça, Pollensa, Sa Rapita, Mahon) and at specific sites along the coast of the Spanish mainland (Tarragona, Barcelona, Valencia) Ciutadella Inlet is about 1 km long, 100 m wide and 5 m deep. The fundamental period of the inlet (Helmholtz mode) is approximately 10.5-10.6 min (Rabinovich et al, 1999;Liu et al, 2003). At other bays along the coast of the Balearic Islands, the eigen periods and the corresponding dominant periods of "rissaga" waves vary from 5 to 45 min.…”

“…meteorological tsunamis. In particular they can exhibit special behaviour to tsunami arrival, directly due to their natural oscillation mode or to the resonant oscillation of the water body, inducing the so-called seiche (Monserrat et al, 1991;Gomis et al, 1993;Monserrat, 1996 and1998;Liu et al, 2003;Jansa et al, 2007).…”

“…The phenomenon of resonant coupling between travelling gravity waves and the ocean is documented worldwide (Donn, 1959;Hibiya and Kajiura, 1982;Rabinovich, 1993;Dragani et al, 2002;Mercer et al, 2002). Due to its similarity to the tsunami waves (barotropic waves propagating in the whole water column), some authors call it meteotsunami (Defant, 1961;Rabinovich and Monserrat, 1998).…”

“…Both effects have been well documented and investigated in some parts of the Mediterranean Sea, such as the Balearic Islands (Tintore et al, 1988;Monserrat et al, 1991Monserrat et al, , 1998Gomis et al, 1993;Garcies et al, 1996;Rabinovich et al, 1999) and Sicily (Candela et al, 1999). Furthermore, an additional sea level set-up may occur as a result of topographic constraints of a basin (Vilibić et al, 2004), edge waves around an island or coupling between two adjacent inlets (Liu et al, 2003).…”
