Coupled-subshell approximation for L-shell ionisation

Abstract: Abstract. The ionisation probability for target L subshells by light ion impact is calculated in the semiclassical approximation, including the couplings between the subshells during the collision. The inclusion of these couplings is found to modify the subshell occupation numbers only slightly for proton and alpha particle impact on heavy target atoms, but a marked effect is found for heavier projectiles. Numerical results for the systems H e + Pt, Ne+ Pt and N e + % are presented. There is in general quiie sa… Show more

“…However, when comparing the results, one should note that the NN interactions used in these calculations are not phase-shift equivalent, i.e., they do not predict exactly the same NN phase shifts. Furthermore, for the interactions used in (Amundsen and Østgaard, 1985;Baldo et al, 1992;Elgarøy et al, 1996a;Takatsuka and Tamagaki, 1993) the predicted phase shifts do not agree accurately with modern phase shift analyses, and the fit of the NN data has typically χ 2 /datum ≈ 3. “…Generally, the gap suppresses the cooling by a factor ∼ exp(−∆/T ) (where ∆ is the energy gap), which is severe for temperatures well below the gap energy. Unfortunately, only few and partly contradictory calculations of the 3 P 2 -3 F 2 pairing gap exist in the literature, even at the level of the bare NN interaction (Amundsen and Østgaard, 1985;Baldo et al, 1992;Elgarøy et al, 1996a;Kodel et al, 1996;Takatsuka and Tamagaki, 1993). “…It is a simplified version of the more general ''coupled-states model" proposed by Amundsen and Jakubassa-Amundsen [10]. The ionization cross sections for L 1 -, L 2 -and L 3 -subshells of Au and Bi bombarded by S-ions, using the modified L-shell fluorescence and Coster-Kronig yields and emission rates are shown in Fig.…”
