Coupled effect of loading frequency and amplitude on the fatigue behavior of advanced sheet molding compound (A-SMC)

Abstract: This paper presents the experimental results of tension-tension stress-controlled fatigue tests performed on advanced sheet molding compound (A-SMC). It aims at analyzing the effect of fiber orientation, loading amplitude, and frequency on the fatigue response and the related temperature evolution due to the self-heating phenomenon. Two types of A-SMC have been analyzed: randomly oriented (RO) and highly oriented (HO). The coupled effect of the loading amplitude and the frequency has been studied. It has been … Show more

“…On the other hand, high strength to weight ratio for materials used in the automotive industry is an essential factor. [1][2][3] Sheet molding compounds (SMCs) have wide application fields in aerospace, agricultural, rail and marine, and building and construction, but SMCs fabrication has been motivated mostly by the automotive industry. 2,4 Moreover, among the advantages of SMCs, the ability to adjust their formulations is very interesting.…”

[5][6][7] The composite matrix of SMCs is a combination of polyester, vinylester or epoxy as a thermosetting resin, fillers such as alumina, calcium carbonate, and thickeners, referred to as additives.…”

“…Sheet molding compounds (SMC) are fiber-reinforced thermoset polymer matrix semi-finished products obtained by a thermocompression process (Whelan and Goff, 1990;Mallick, 2007;Orgéas and Dumont, 2012;Lamanna and Ceparano, 2014;Schladitz et al, 2017;Shirinbayan et al, 2017). Since the last two decades, these composites represent an ideal choice for large structural automotive components due to their high strength-to-weight ratio.…”
