Countryside within the City: A Motivating Vision behind Civic Green Area Stewardship in Warsaw, Poland

Abstract: In the midst of the epoch of the Urban Anthropocene, citizen engagement is an important step on the path of creating local and global sustainability. However, the factors that motivate civic urban dwellers to become voluntary stewards of nature environments inside cities need research. This is an empirical study based on deep interviews and a grounded theory approach focused on the "inner world" of people in Warsaw, Poland, that engage in green area stewardship. Our approach reveals a commonly shared vision as… Show more

“…Additionally, HNC-learning cannot solely be achieved through the creation of more spatially accessible natural environments in cities, but needs to be circumscribed by property rights that allow institutional accessibility for people to physically engage with natural environments. It has been argued that people acquire positive attitudes toward an attitudinal object because of what they do behaviorally, as opposed to the opposite assumption that people behave in certain ways because they like it [101,135]. There are also limits to achieving HNC in cities, as presumptive sentiments toward nature not always are positive.…”

“…UGCs can be viewed as the urban analogues to the local commons that can be found in rural settings and in traditional societies, where common-property systems are plentiful [98][99][100]. In contrast to stewards of rural commons, people managing resources in urban green commons do not depend on these for their daily livelihood, but partake in UGCs for a number of reasons, such as having an interest to learn about gardening, having contact with nature, to socialize and for keeping up intra-cultural identities [101][102][103].…”

“…Social–ecological systems research could address the issue of how to promote a co-evolution between PEH and environmentally conscious identities, especially among urban residents that are often psychologically disconnected from the Biosphere (Colding et al 2020 ; Giusti et al 2020 ). For instance, the research on urban stewardship may find novel empirical avenues on how habits and routines around actively caring for local ecosystems and species may co-evolve with intrinsic motivation (Andersson et al 2017 ; Sanecka et al 2020 ).…”

“…The results also indicated that place of residence significantly influenced the level of sense of place, and students who lived in the suburbs had a higher level of sense of place, which is consistent with the results of other similar studies where place of residence was considered as a factor influencing individuals’ level of sense of place ( Lim and Barton, 2010 ). For example, the natural environment of the suburbs can inspire stronger place attachment ( Sanecka et al, 2020 ).…”
