There needs to be more research on the global risks and developmental determinants of foreign direct investment inflow with green investment campaigns. This article presents new evidence covering 116 countries (2018–2020) using least squares regression. We show that ceteris paribus, higher perceived environmental and geopolitical risks are more likely to increase foreign direct investment. We also find that lower business environment, safety and security, and environmental sustainability increase foreign direct investment inflow. Meanwhile, foreign investment inflow increased positively according to price competitiveness, infrastructure quality, and natural resources. One development variable, information, and communication technology readiness, becomes significant when the analysis is performed only on developing countries. Economic risks, societal risks, technological risks, health and hygiene, human resources, and international openness are not significantly affecting investment inflow. An insightful theoretical implication regarding the finding is that some supports exist for the pollution haven hypothesis. Implications for practice include creating supportive policies that appreciate sustainable practices, such that investors are attracted to the country not as opportunistic polluters but as sustainability pioneers.

The tremendous rise in Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows following the economic reforms in 1991, has been one of the most prominent features shaping the behavior of the Indian economy in the past three decades. The present study is based on secondary data and the objective is to examine the trends in FDI inflows to India following the global financial crisis, for the period 2009-2010 to 2021-2022. Additionally, the distributional pattern of FDI among the regions and states of India is also analyzed, using the data for 30 states/territories. The results reveal that total FDI inflows have increased in substantial amounts over the period from US$ 37,745 million in 2009-2010 to US$ 84,835 million in 2021-2022. Maharashtra and Karnataka have surpassed all other states in FDI equity inflows over the period from October 2019 to September 2022. These two states have commanded 50 percent of the total FDI, whereas the regions in central, eastern, and northeast India have received less than 3 percent of the total FDI equity inflows. Thus, the regional disparities in the distribution of FDI are quite visible post-analysis. It is suggested that government should focus on making investor-friendly policies to tap the potential of regions neglected by foreign investors.

Is Foreign Direct Investment Resilient Post the COVID-19 Pandemic? The Case of a Subnational Economy

The disruption brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic has been unprecedented in its global reach and unique impacts. While the literature has addressed the disruption effect on FDI at the country level, we provide a unique dive into the presence and development of FDI at a subnational location. We use detailed data on spatial and industrial distributions of FDI in the U.S. state of New Hampshire and find support for all our hypotheses related to post-disruption recovery and resilience. Given the varied impact of the pandemic on FDI across locations, and the heterogeneity in local conditions, we contend that the subnational recovery depends on the impact of the disruption and happens at varying levels and timelines. While the literature documented that foreign businesses choose to embed in their local host environments, few studies have considered empirically how the level of local integration affects FDI recovery after disruption. We propose that subnational locations with a high level of integration maintain relative strength in FDI post-disruption. The COVID-19 pandemic disruption presents an opportunity to evaluate FDI resilience. We postulate that existing FDI and spatial agglomerations of FDI-related activities impact the post-disruption resilience of FDI at a subnational location. The analysis concludes on actionable insights for researchers and practitioners regarding how to navigate the FDI inflows and activities at their specific location.
