Counting pots in Early Neolithic Greece

Abstract: The present paper examines the quantity and function of the pottery found at the Greek Early Neolithic sites. Review of the quantitative, technological, typological, functional and contextual data suggest that Early Neolithic pottery was most probably a regular component of material culture. Thus, in contrast with the highly favoured hypothesis that Early Neolithic pots were used mainly for cult-related or socially related prospects, it is argued that pottery had, since this early period, a variety of function… Show more

“…Only recently have these views been reconsidered, and the number of studies on the ceramic production process in the Neolithic Balkans and Aegean is increasing exponentially (Dimoula, 2014;Doherty and Tarkan, 2013;de Groot, in press;Pentedeka, 2008Pentedeka, , 2011Pentedeka and Dimoula, 2009;Spataro, 2006Spataro, , 2011Spataro, , 2014Thissen, 2017;Tomkins, 2008;Tomkins and Day, 2001;Vitelli, 1993Vitelli, , 1999Yiouni, 1996). “…The similarities with the painted patterns on the vessels, as well as the identical building techniques with stone basis and mud-brick walls in Early Neolithic additionally verify the possible direction of first Neolithic dispersion in Macedonia along Vardar river (Gimbutas ed. 1976;Naumov 2009a;Pyke 1996;Tasić 2006;2007;Washburn 1984;Yiouni 1996). These painted patterns and architectural practices are currently not familiar for the Pelagonian sites, although later resemblance with the Thessalian painted vessels should not be disregarded.…”

“…For the Late Neolithic, a ‘kiln-like’ structure has been noted at Kryoneri (Malamidou, 2007), at the complex S8 in Dimini, and installations at Stavroupolis and Limenaria have also been identified (discussion with references in Souvatzi, 2008: 181–82). Other kinds of installation are sometimes mentioned, notably bonfire and pit-firing (Gimbutas et al, 1989, for Middle Neolithic Achilleion; Yiouni, 1996: 69, for Early Neolithic Nea Nikomedeia), but none of these cases has been argued conclusively. Pots may have been fired away from the settlements at small temporary sites, unrecognized because of their small size (Loughlin, 2010: 34–35).…”
