Passive countercurrent microextractors with high throughputs have potentially broad applications in industrialscale solvent extraction and hazardous waste disposal. To date, no design guideline has been available for developing such microextractors based on passive cocurrent microextractors. In this study, an oscillating feedback microextractor was chosen as an example system to provide a clear roadmap for bridging the gap between passive co-and countercurrent microextractors and achieving high-throughput countercurrent microextraction. Four steps were necessary, namely, (1) determination of the countercurrent flow arrangement strategy, (2) selection and modification of a primary passive cocurrent microextractor, (3) establishment of a passive single-unit countercurrent microextractor, and (4) parallelization of the passive single-unit countercurrent microextractor with the aim of achieving high throughput. The development from a passive cocurrent microextractor to a passive and high-throughput countercurrent microextractor was demonstrated using the oscillating feedback microextractor.

Separation and identification of molecules and biomolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, and polysaccharides from complex fluids are known to be important due to unmet needs in various applications. Generally, many different separation techniques, including chromatography, electrophoresis, and magnetophoresis, have been developed to identify the target molecules precisely. However, these techniques are expensive and time consuming. “Lab‐on‐a‐chip” systems with low cost per device, quick analysis capabilities, and minimal sample consumption seem to be ideal candidates for separating particles, cells, blood samples, and molecules. From this perspective, different microfluidic‐based techniques have been extensively developed in the past two decades to separate samples with different origins. In this review, “lab‐on‐a‐chip” methods by passive, active, and hybrid approaches for the separation of biomolecules developed in the past decade are comprehensively discussed. Due to the wide variety in the field, it will be impossible to cover every facet of the subject. Therefore, this review paper covers passive and active methods generally used for biomolecule separation. Then, an investigation of the combined sophisticated methods is highlighted. The spotlight also will be shined on the elegance of separation successes in recent years, and the remainder of the article explores how these permit the development of novel techniques.

Fluidic oscillators (FOs) are used in a variety of applications, including process control and process intensification. Despite the simple design and operation of FOs, the fluid dynamics of FOs exhibit rich complexities. The inherently unstable flow, jet oscillations, and resulting vortices influence mixing and other transport processes. In this work, we computationally investigated the fluid dynamics of a new design of a planar FO with backflow limbs. The design comprised of two symmetric backflow limbs leading to bistable flow. The unsteady flow dynamics, internal recirculation, jet oscillations, secondary flow vortices were computationally studied over a range of inlet Reynolds numbers (2400-12,000). The nature and frequency of the jet oscillations were quantified. The computed jet oscillation frequency was compared with the experimentally measured (using imaging techniques) jet oscillation frequency. The flow model was then used to quantitatively understand mixing, heat transfer, and residence time distribution. The approach and the results presented in this work will provide a basis for designing FO's with desired flow and transport characteristics for various engineering applications.
