“…Female students also revealed more positive attitudes toward counseling than male students, which is in line with the previous findings on gender difference in help seeking attitudes (Fischer and Farina 1995;Leong and Zachar 1999;Sheu and Sedlacek 2004). Asian international students' preference for a directive counseling style than U.S. students is consistent with previous findings (Exum and Lau 1988;Mau and Jepsen 1988), which may be due to their cultural background of respecting authority figures and/or unfamiliarity with the counseling process (e.g., not knowing what to expect from counseling). However, this study did not support the gender difference found in Seo's (2005) study that Korean female international students indicated greater preference for a directive style than male students.…”

“…The CERS has satisfactory concurrent validity (r = 0.80) with the Counsellor Rating Form (Barak & LaCrosse, 1975). The CERS has been used in research intended to measure Asian international students' perceptions of counsellor effectiveness (Exum & Lau, 1988;Merta, Ponterotto, & Brown, 1992;Ponterotto & Merta, 1987). For psychometric reasons (Ponterotto & Furlong, 1985), only the total score for the CERS rather than the four individual subscores was used in this study.…”

“…Empirical studies over the past decades have suggested that Asians prefer a directive counselling style that supplies pragmatic information (Atkinson, Maruyam, & Matsui, 1978;Atkinson & Matsushita, 1991;Exum & Lau, 1988;Foley & Faqua, 1988;Leong & Sadlacek, 1986;Merta, Ponterotto, & Brown, 1992;Waxer, 1989). It should be noted, however, that the findings are often contradictory even when the same issues are studied.…”

“…A direct and structured form of counselling has been recommended for international students (Exum & Lau, 1988;Idowu, 1985;Ponce & Atkinson, 1989;Tan, 1967;Wong, 1984;Yiu, 1979). Iranian, African, and Chinese students expect openness, directiveness, expertise, concreteness, and immediacy from their counsellors (Yuen & Tinsley, 1981).…”
