Coulomb-blockade transport in quasi-one-dimensional polymer nanofibers

Abstract: We report the low temperature current-voltage (I-V) characteristics studies in quasi one-dimensional conducting polymer nanofibers. We find a threshold voltage V t below which little current flows at temperatures below 30 -40 K. For V > V t current scales as (V/V t -1) ζ , where ζ ~ 1.8 -2.1 at high biases. Differential conductance oscillations are observed whose magnitude increases as temperature decreases below 10 K. We attributed the observed low temperature I-V behavior to Coulomb blockade effects with a c… Show more

“…Although electrochemical synthesis is a very feasible and convenient means of fabrication, the alignment of CP nanowire remains a challenge. Samitsu utilized "molecular combing" techniques to stretch poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) nanowires on Pt nanoelectrodes [16] and Aleshin synthesized nanowires of helical polyacetylene in an asymmetric reaction field of chiral nematic liquid crystals [13,17]. Both groups proposed relatively easy approaches for fabricating CP nanowires.…”

“…Park, Aleshin and colleagues have conducted detailed studies of conductivities of PAc and PPY nanofibers [91][92][93][94]104]. In these studies, the authors tried to take the quasi-1-D nature of the polymer molecules into consideration to explain the observed conductivity as a function of sample temperature -(T).…”

“…Studies on individually addressable CP nanowires can thus presumably yield more detailed transport physics. Substantial numbers of investigation have been carried out on single PAC, PPY, PANI, and PEDOT nanowires and nanotubes [38,51,79,[88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95][96][97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105]. These investigations have significantly improved our understanding of electrical conductivity in this category of materials.…”

“…Many products were made mainly from polymers instead of such as metal and wood in order to reduce the weight and cost. Therefore, many research groups investigate polymer fiber [1][2][3], film [4][5][6][7], and composites [8][9][10][11]. On the other hand, the dwindling natural resources and the global warming increasingly pose a severe problem to our life in near future.…”
