Could it be gluten? Additional skin conditions associated with celiac disease

Abstract: Celiac disease is a multifactorial, inflammatory disorder initiated and sustained by the ingestion of gluten. Occurring across a broad population, the intestinal and extraintestinal manifestations of celiac disease are variable in severity and may be nonspecific in presentation. Given that environmental, genetic, and immune factors involved in the pathogenesis of celiac disease that the digestive tract and skin share many characteristics, and with a prevalence of 0.5-1% in most populations, it is reasonable to… Show more

“…According to the authors, the presence of non-specific mild to moderate intraepithelial lymphocyte infiltration without evidence of villous atrophy which was seen only in those of positive AGAs, suggests a state of gluten sensitivity rather than necessarily CD in these subsets of patients [50]. However, the same results were not reproduced in a German, Italian and Australian studies probably in part due to ethnicity differences [55][56][57]. Indeed, in Europe, Germany has the lowest prevalence of CD whereas Sweden and Finland have the highest prevalence of the disease [58].…”

“…They also prevent a complete enzymatic breakdown of gluten in consumers' intestines, increasing the concentration of toxic oligopeptides [2]. Celiac disease (CD), one of the five major illnesses associated with gluten [3], is a multifactorial autoimmune disease triggered in individuals genetically predisposed to gluten intake, which has been on the rise in the past 15-20 years [4,5]. The resulting small intestinal inflammatory process is accompanied by the production of specific antibodies against gliadin (prolamin of wheat) and tissue transglutaminase (TG), leading to a variety of gastrointestinal and extraintestinal manifestations of a wide range of severity [4,6].…”

Despite the prevalence of CD rising to 1% worldwide; with some studies reporting a fourfold increase in the past 50 years, CD remains an often underdiagnosed condition [7][8][9].…”
