“…This social and emotional toll was felt for decades when they were denied access to their traditional grounds, and when there was little communication with their elders or Tribal members. For many Native Americans, it is not just a matter of the existence of chemicals and radionuclide contamination on their Tribal Treaty lands, but that infrastructures and the destruction or degradation of ecosystems damages burial and hunting grounds, destroys their traditional medicinal and religious plants, and degrades viewsheds (Bohnee et al., 2011; Burger, 2019; Gochfeld et al., 2015; Landeen & Pinkham, 1999). Their culture and values require intact ecosystems, per se (Burger et al., 2010; Harris & Harper, 2000), and in their view the Columbia River was impacted, in this case, by chromium.…”

“…Individual and species susceptibilities the risk to ecological resources, particularly after disruptions, can be found in Burger (2019) and Burger et al (2020Burger et al ( , 2022. The traditional indices or endpoints for ecological risk are far narrower than the complexities in Table 1, but provide an initial understanding of the issues involved (Table 2).…”

“…Most of these evaluation measures are grounded in economics, using hedonic pricing models to analyze changes in housing values in neighborhoods around contaminated sites. Economists also apply cost-benefi t analyses by comparing societal benefi ts of cleanups, in the form of increased housing prices or tax revenue, to cleanup costs (Burger 2019;Burger et al 2019;Greenstone and Gallagher 2008;Savchenko and Braden 2019). Hedonic modeling analyses indicate that environmental cleanups can have a positive eff ect on neighborhood housing prices (Chattopadhyay et al 2005;Timmins 2011, 2013;Ketkar 1992;Mastromonaco and Maniloff 2018), but not always (Greenstone and Gallagher 2008;Kiel 1995).…”

“…In November 2019, the third edition of this superb conference took place once again in Costa de Caparica, Portugal, keeping to our tradition of collegiality and scientific endeavor to help the environment. We listened to amazing plenary talks by Joanna Burger (USA) on the temporal trends in heavy metals in the US Atlantic Coast Estuaries (Ostrom et al 1999 ; Burger 2019 ) and by Elena Rodica Ionescu (France) on toxicity and biosensing of environmental pollutants (Ionescu et al 2006 ; Zhou et al 2019 ). Jia-Qian Jiang (UK) spoke about water and wastewater treatments using double hydroxide materials (Wang et al 2019 ; Jiang and Lloyd 2002 ), Shin Takahashi (Japan) delighted us with a presentation about the persistence of organic pollutants in the Asia Pacific Region (Monirith et al 2003 ; Anh et al 2019 ), and Jose Luis Gomez-Ariza (Spain) captivated us with a talk combining analysis and health problems in relation to metallomics and metabolomics in environmental metal toxicity assessment (Rodriguez-Moro et al 2020 ; Gómez-Ariza et al 2000 ).…”

“…We would like to congratulate Prof. Joanna Burger, who received the Proteomass Scientific Society Career Award 2019 for her contributions to eco-toxicology, behavioral toxicology, ecology, and environmental monitoring and assessment (Ostrom et al 1999 : Burger 2019 ) (Fig. 1 ).…”
