Cost, Performance, and Sustainability of Redox Flow Batteries Using 4,5-Dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonic Acid and Vanadium Enhanced by Cross Compensation of the Activation Process

Abstract: Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) receive attention as a promising energy storage device due to high efficiency and excellent long-term durability although vanadium ore is expensive. To address this price issue, cheap quinone RFBs (QRFBs) using anthraquinone-2,7-disulfonic acid and 4,5-dihydroxy-1,3-benzenedisulfonic acid (tiron) are introduced. However, QRFBs require additional activation process of tiron. To alleviate the issues of VRFBs and QRFBs, new RFBs using vanadium and tiron as the anolyte and cat… Show more

“…Large-scale stationary electrochemical energy storage, which is unlimited by geographical conditions, plays an important role in the integration of renewable energy into power grids. , VRFBs hold excellent potential for balancing and shifting generated valuable clean energy compared to other energy storage systems, owing to their ultralong lifespan, flexible modular design, high safety, and decoupled power output. , As the core components of VRFBs, the positive and negative electrodes offer regions for the V(IV)/V(V) and V(II)/V(III) redox reactions, respectively, significantly affecting the energy efficiency (EE) and voltage efficiency (VE) of the battery system. , The electrode activity affects the half reaction rate, and the electrode structure affects the distribution and diffusion of the electrolyte . Traditional electrodes, such as carbon felt (CF), have been extensively used in VRFBs owing to the high electronic conductivity and corrosion resistance.…”
