Objective To identify the costs of hospital care for patients with COVID-19 and the amount of out-of-pocket payments. Methods We conducted a systematic review using Scopus and WEB OF SCIENCE and PubMed databases in April 5, 2022 and then updated in January 15, 2023. English articles with no publication year restrictions were included with study designs of cost-of-illness (COI) studies, cost analyses, and observational reports (cross-sectional studies and prospective and retrospective cohorts) that calculated the patient-level cost of care for COVID-19. Costs are reported in USD with purchasing power parity (PPP) conversion in 2020. The PROSPERO registration number is CRD42022334337. Results The results showed that the highest total cost of hospitalization in intensive care per patient was 100789 USD, which was reported in Germany, and the lowest cost was 5436.77 USD, which was reported in Romania. In the present study, in the special care department, the highest percentage of total expenses is related to treatment expenses (42.23 percent), while in the inpatient department, the highest percentage of total expenses is related to the costs of hospital beds/day of routine services (39.07 percent). The highest percentage of out-of-pocket payments was 30.65 percent, reported in China, and the lowest percentage of out-of-pocket payments was 1.12 percent, reported in Iran. The highest indirect cost per hospitalization was 16049 USD, reported in USA, and the lowest was 449.07 USD, reported in India. Conclusion The results show that the COVID-19 disease imposed a high cost of hospitalization, mainly the cost of hospital beds/day of routine services. Studies have used different methods for calculating the costs, and this has negatively impacted the comparability costs across studies. Therefore, it would be beneficial for researchers to use a similar cost calculation model to increase the compatibility of different studies. Systematic review registration: PROSPERO CRD42022334337

How many people is the COVID-19 pandemic pushing into poverty? A long-term forecast to 2050 with alternative scenarios

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the course of human development. In this manuscript we analyze the long-term effect of COVID-19 on poverty at the country-level across various income thresholds to 2050. We do this by introducing eight quantitative scenarios that model the future of Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG1) achievement using alternative assumptions about COVID-19 effects on both economic growth and inequality in the International Futures model. Relative to a scenario without the pandemic (the No COVID scenario), the COVID Base scenario increases global extreme poverty by 73.9 million in 2020 (the range across all scenarios: 43.5 to 155.0 million), 63.6 million in 2030 (range: 9.8 to 167.2 million) and 57.1 million in 2050 (range: 3.1 to 163.0 million). The COVID Base results in seven more countries not meeting the SDG1 target by 2030 that would have achieved the target in a No COVID scenario. The most pessimistic scenario results in 17 more countries not achieving SDG1 compared with a No COVID scenario. The greatest pandemic driven increases in poverty occur in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.

Pandeminin emek piyasaları üzerindeki yıkıcı etkileri tüm dünyada olduğu gibi Türkiye'de de yaşanmaktadır. Tüm dünyada milyonlarca işçi ya işini tamamen kaybetmiş ya ücretsiz izine çıkmış ya da daha az çalışmak ve daha düşük ücret almak zorunda kalmıştır. ILO'nun yaptığı hesaplamalar 125 milyon tam zamanlı çalışanın işsiz kaldığını göstermektedir. COVID-19 Pandemisinin istihdam üzerindeki yıkıcı etkileri hem formel hem de enformel sektör çalışanlarını etkilemektedir. Ne var ki bu süreçten en fazla etkilenenler hiçbir sosyal güvencesi olmayan enformel sektör çalışanlarıdır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, Pandemi sürecinde Türkiye'deki emek piyasalarında formel ve enformel sektörler arasında ayrışmanın olup-olmadığının sınanmasıdır. Sınama için veriler TÜİK veri portalından NUTS-2'ye göre derlenmiştir. Bölgesel birimlere göre formel ve enformel sektörlerdeki istihdamda 2019-2020 arasında yaşanan değişimler dikkate alınmıştır. Toplam istihdam hacimlerindeki değişimin yanı sıra, istihdamın eğitim, işyeri ölçeği ve cinsiyete göre sınamaları da gerçekleştirilmiştir. Elde edilen bulgular, istihdamda yaşanan değişime göre formel ve enformel sektörler arasında anlamlı bir ayrışmanın varlığını göstermektedir. Buna ek olarak Pandeminin formel sektörde yeni istihdam yaratabilmesine karşılık, enformel sektörde genel olarak şiddetli daralmanın yaşanmasına yol açtığı görülmektedir. Bu durum, Pandeminin enformel sektörde istihdam edilen geniş kitlelerin iş kaybı sebebiyle yoksulluk riskiyle karşı karşıya olduğunu göstermektedir.
