Cost of assessing a child for possible autism spectrum disorder? An observational study of current practice in child development centres in the UK

Abstract: ObjectiveUK guidelines recommend that diagnosis of autism in children requires assessment by a multidisciplinary team. With growing numbers of referrals for assessment, diagnostic services have been under increasing pressure to meet the level of need. This study aimed to explore the number of hours of professional time required to complete such an assessment based on current practice in secondary care child development centres across the UK, and from this we calculate the cost of assessment.DesignAn online que… Show more

“…The project seems to be very cost-effective with estimated costs per family of around £1000. This compares to an estimated average cost of £850 of assessing and diagnosing a child with ASD in the UK (Galliver et al 2017). However further research is warranted on this issue as noted below.…”

“…Next, the robustness of our DANN was further tested using varying k-fold cross validation. A classification model that is not robust may appear to perform very differently with different k. Figure 4 shows plots of the accuracy, sensitivity, precision, F-score, and specificity of the proposed DANN over k-fold cross validation strategies (k [6,7,8,9,10]). Using one-way ANOVA, the proposed DANN exhibited no significantly different performance across varying k-fold experiments (p 0.082), indicating the robustness of the proposed multichannel DANN model.…”

“…Currently, behavior-based test is the standard clinical method for diagnosing ASD [9]. However, the diagnostic process for ASD is not only time consuming but also costly [10]. is results in a tremendous financial burden for patients' families.…”

“…13 This suggests demand for diagnostic services has outstripped capacity, exacerbated by recent increases in demand. 15 Additionally, assessment is time consuming and costly; Galliver et al, 16 found assessments took a mean of 13 hours of professional time, costing £800 per child/young person. Our recent study of 500 children's diagnostic journeys estimated 15 hours, costing around £950 per child.…”
