Cost Estimation of Cardiovascular Disease Events in the US

Abstract: This study provides updated estimates of medical care costs of cardiovascular events among a managed care population over various time horizons. Results suggest that the economic burden of cardiovascular disease is substantial, both in the acute phase as well as over the longer term.

“…95,96 Cost-Effectiveness of Therapy Both the acute and long-term costs associated with cardiovascular events are high. [97][98][99][100] For example, in a managed care setting, the total first-year health care cost per patient after acute coronary syndrome was estimated at $22,529. 97 In another managed care study, the total average annualized health care costs for the treatment of peripheral artery disease was $5,955.…”

“…Furthermore, the cost-effectiveness of statins will generally continue to decrease as the patents for these drugs expire. 99 Indeed, over a longer-term period of treatment of more than 10 years, generic high-intensity statin therapy to lower LDL-C levels by 50% is more cost-effective than lower doses of statins in primary prevention in those without FH. 101 As previously levels was observed; however, adverse effects included increased aminotransferase levels and fat in the liver.…”

“…It is also interesting to compare the costs of psychiatric hospitalization to those for common general medical disorders. For example, recent cost-estimates of hospitalization for stroke have averaged 21.8 (CI: 4.70-39.0), and for a heart attack or comparable cardiac illness, 27.3 (8.75-35.8) thousands of US dollars, or 2.3-2.9-times more than the average cost of psychiatric hospitalization at the present study site, 9.50 (8.86-10.1) [58][59][60].…”

“…Costs associated with stroke and myocardial infarction were estimated from a recent analysis of a large managed care population in the United States and other published sources (22)(23)(24). Costs of CEA were estimated from Medicare payments from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project Nationwide Inpatient Sample (21).…”
