Cost efficient maintenance strategies for wind power systems using LCC

Abstract: Maintenance costs for wind power plants are a significant part of the total life cycle cost, especially for offshore wind power plants, situated at remote sites. In order to decrease the cost of maintenance, monitoring systems have been used to estimate the condition of critical components in wind turbines. This paper proposes Life Cycle Cost analysis (LCC) approach for maintenance management of wind turbines. The LCC approach for maintenance management presented in this paper is an extension on previous work … Show more

“…Carroll et al [54] evaluated different WT concepts (DFIG vs. PMG), different condition monitoring systems [70] are available or under research [71][72][73] to detect failures at an early stage and keep costs low. All presented failure rates can be of help to choose a suitable maintenance strategy [74] and to prioritize future research. In any case, users should choose their data source for further applications very carefully.…”

“…With the integration of renewable energy sources into the main grid, wind‐farms and photovoltaic plants are also part of asset management. Both have been extensively studied from asset management point of view in literatures . A real‐life case study on asset management in Singapore was conducted by Yoon and Teo , although it focused more on underground grids.…”

“…Under asset management, maintenance of physical components and policies forms the crucial part. Literature survey shows that there have been explicit studies on maintenance of various power system components, that is, power transformers , overhead lines and cables , protection devices and wind‐farm components . Maintenance strategies like corrective maintenance , preventive maintenance and Reliability‐Centered Maintenance (RCM) have been explicitly studied.…”

“…The authors have tried the best to include classification and maintenance theories, while also focusing on risk assessment techniques all in one literature study. The study includes 65 articles published from 1996-2014, trying to keep the study updated with papers published in 2014 [4][41] [65]. A table of publication listing is shown in Table 1.…”

“…With the integration of renewable energy sources, wind-farms, also part of asset management, have been extensively studied from the asset management point of view in [4][5], [33]- [36]. Other components in transmission and distribution systems widely studied are power transformers, overhead lines and circuit breakers, to name a few.…”
