Cost-Efficient Hybrid WDM-MDM-Ro-FSO System for Broadband Services in Hospitals

Abstract: The expansion of high-speed communication needs due to explosive growth of subscribers each year has led the researchers to design the next generation communication systems which can cope with the current growing demand. Millimeter waves, operated within the range of 30 GHz to 300 GHz, can become potential carrier for delivering large amount of data. However, in hospital scenarios, these radio waves are subjected to strict regulations due to direct impact on patients’ health as well as high interference with o… Show more

“…The designed system has been configured according to the link parameters of a typically practical and commercial FSO system, specified in Table 1 [17,20,[32][33][34]. In addition to this, the link parameters of the designed system have been benchmarked with peer literature for ensuring the proximity to realistic FSO link conditions.…”

“…The results show that RZ‐DPSK modulation performs better than NRZ‐DPSK over 2 km FSO range 20 . Also various proposed unidirectional FSO systems like dense wavelength division multiplexing FSO (DWDM‐FSO), 21 mode division multiplexing (MDM) based WDM FSO, 22 OCDMA‐FSO with polarization division multiplexing (PDM), 23 WDM‐MDM with radio over FSO (Ro‐FSO) 24 and MDM‐PDM‐Ro‐FSO 25 have been investigated under the impact of different weather conditions. But these systems lack in maximum reach upto 20 km and data rate of 10 Gbps per channel.…”

“…Space division multiplexing (SDM) is regarded as an information transmission technique that exploits multiple spatial laser modes having distinct intensity and phase profiles to transmit concurrent high‐speed data signals 17 . The experimental demonstration of vector SDM to transmit 228‐Gbit/s information over 80‐cm FSO link using optical frequency comb is reported in Zhang et al 18 The work in Liang et al 19 reports four‐channel hybrid WDM‐SDM transmission in FSO link employing Laguerre–Gaussian (LG) and Hermite–Gaussian (HG) modes and nonreturn to zero (NRZ) modulation; 40‐Gbit/s data transmission for 440–1200 m range for varying atmospheric conditions is achieved. A 100‐Gbit/s hybrid orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexed‐WDM FSO transmission for range varying from 500–3200 m is reported in Dutta et al 20 The work in Singh et al 21 reports 40‐Gbit/s FSO transmission for range varying from 64 to 800 m by employing OAM multiplexing with NRZ signals.…”
