Abstract: Introduction. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality, estimated to be the third most common cause of death by 2020. The natural evolution of the disease is characterized by frequent exacerbations, severe exacerbations evolving with respiratory acidosis.
