Cost-Effectiveness Analysis ofHelicobacter pyloriDiagnostic Methods in Patients with Atrophic Gastritis

Abstract: Background. There are several diagnostic methods for Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. A cost-effective analysis is needed to decide on the optimal diagnostic method. The aim of this study was to determine a cost-effective diagnostic method in patients with atrophic gastritis (AG). Methods. A decision-analysis model including seven diagnostic methods was constructed for patients with AG diagnosed by esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Expected values of cost and effectiveness were calculated for each test. Re… Show more

“…Gastritis is an inflammation of the gastric mucosa that is usually caused by an infectious agent (Sánchez‐Fayos Calabuig et al, 2009). Globally, most cases of gastritis are caused by Helicobacter pylori (HP) (Omata et al, 2017; Wang et al, 2013), which penetrates the gastric mucosa to colonize human gastric epithelial cells, triggering a variety of gastric mucosal inflammatory reaction (Yang et al, 2021). Gastritis is able to result in ulcers and increase the risk of stomach cancer (Cheng et al, 2017).…”

“…Cost-effectiveness can be determined using simulation modeling [15][16][17][18][19] . An H. pylori antibody (HPA) test screening followed by eradication treatment for employees in Japan has been shown to be more cost-effective than no screening 15) , and an HPA test followed by eradication is more cost-effective than UGI only and endoscopy only for gastric cancer 16) .…”

“…More than 70% gastritis are caused by H. pylori infection, which is responsible for more than 90% of active gastritis [ 3 ]. H. pylori infection is the main cause of chronic gastritis, which is called H. pylori -associated gastritis (HAG) [ 4 , 5 ]. H. pylori infection causes gastric mucosal layer edema and neutrophil infiltration, leads to acute gastric mucosal inflammation, and then results in chronic gastritis.…”
