Cost‐effective multi‐pulse AC‐DC converter with lower than 3% current THD

Abstract: In this paper, a new multi-pulse clean power converter topology is presented with lower than 3% input current total harmonic distortion (THD). The topology is based on the combination of a 36-pulse converter and a pulse doubling circuit. The 36-pulse converter consists of a "polygon" autotransformer and two 18-pulse diode bridge rectifiers. Pulse doubling circuit consists of zerosequence-blocking transformer (ZSBT) and tapped interphase transformer (IPT). The important advantage of the proposed AC-DC converter… Show more

“…In 30,31,33,36,37 , the researchers proposed rectifiers with the kVA rating is more than 45% of the load power. In Abdollahi, 34 the same as the proposed 56-PR, the kVA rating is less than 45%. However, it should be mentioned that the 72-PR has a very complex structure.…”

“…It is recommended to employ the DC ripple reinjection method to increase the number of pulses while the complexity and cost are unchanged. 15,[32][33][34] In Saravana et al, 15 a transformer-based AC-DC converter with a 72-pulse configuration is proposed. The proposed method is successful to solve the problem of the THD for the input currents.…”

“…It indicates that the kVA rating of the proposed forty-four rectifier is 42% while the current THD is less than 1.6%. Also, the kVA rating of the proposed rectifier is 21.98% less than the 40-pulse [29], 6.45% less than the 40-pulse [30], 15.26% less than the 40-pulse [31], 20.2% less than the 72-pulse [34], and 2.33% less than the 72-pulse [35] configurations. Table 2 includes an analytic studies between the number of diodes, magnetic rating comparison, and cost analysis for the proposed forty-four pulse configuration with 20-pulse rectifier [29]- [31], 36-pulse rectifier [35], 40-pulse rectifier [29]- [31], and 72-pulse rectifier [34], [35].…”

“…As mentioned in Ref [35], the cost is estimated at 4.5 times the kVA rating of the transformer. It should be emphasized that the total cost and size of the system is determined by the transformer magnetic rating.…”

“…In [19], a 20-PR has been proposed, whose rating is 30.12% of the load rating. Also, several studies have also been carried out using 40-PR and 72-PR [20][21][22] for harmonic mitigation. The kVA rating of these rectifiers is more than 40% of the load rating.…”
