“…Our results support previous studies that determined that over half of nurses have attended work despite being ill (Graf et al 2016;Warren et al 2011), which points to presenteeism as a phenomenon that must be analysed in depth due to its high prevalence (Chiu et al 2017;Mach et al 2018) and its proven association with labour discontent, work-load, labour stress and insecurity (Reuter et al 2019;Skela-Savic et al 2017). Its consequences have proven to be significant for the healthcare system and employees, showing that strategic training to control and reduce it is essential (Schneider et al 2017).…”

“…These associations remained even after controlling for ill-health symptoms. Associations between presenteeism and reduced work ability is in line with studies from other countries, although different definitions of work ability and productivity have been applied in the studies [1,7,8,13,15,16,21,30,35,36]. One study that focused on the relationship between reduced work ability and productivity loss argued that perceived work ability is a robust indicator for assessing productivity loss [21].…”

“…One study looked at presenteeism resulting from back pain and depression and estimated the cost of presenteeism to be $14,339 per nurse annually in the United States. 18 These studies 8,18,19,20 of nurse presenteeism consequences all measured presenteeism through different self-report measures. Conceptualization and measurement of presenteeism that is inclusive of more than one risk factor will provide a fuller picture of the true consequences of presenteeism in the nursing workforce.…”
