Cosmological parameters from combining the Lyman-α forest with CMB, galaxy clustering and SN constraints

Abstract: We combine the Ly-α forest power spectrum (LYA) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and high resolution spectra with cosmic microwave background (CMB) including 3-year WMAP, and supernovae (SN) and galaxy clustering constraints to derive new constraints on cosmological parameters. The existing LYA power spectrum analysis is supplemented by constraints on the mean flux decrement derived using a principle component analysis for quasar continua, which improves the LYA constraints on the linear power. We find… Show more

“…The dashed line at α = 1/3 shows the degeneracy condition (where ∆χ 2 is equal to zero by construction) and the vertical dashed line corresponds to the tightest limit on the sum of neutrino mass found in literature [9], that is 0.4eV. A few recent preprints find tighter limits using the latest cosmological data: 0.3eV in [37] and 0.17eV in [38]. Solid thin lines are contours of constant ∆χ 2 as stated in the caption.…”

“…Nevertheless this has been the standard procedure in most of the recent parameter analyses based on WMAP-3 [2,4]. The caveat is especially relevant because we found a degeneracy between m ν = 0 and N eff , based on the cosmological data available in 2003 [5][6][7][8].…”

“…It has been claimed that a running of the spectral index will be excluded in the presence of SDSS Lyman α observations [31,32,33,34], the systematics of Lyman α data are relatively less constrained [1,23] and we leave this in a separate investigation to be reported in [35], and detailed analysis with other additional possible degeneracies in [36]. For many years neutrinos have played a fundamental role in both physics and astrophysics, and provided venues of new physics such as the parity violation and oscillations with tiny masses.…”
