Cosmetic outcomes following transoral versus transcervical thyroidectomy

Abstract: Background: Central neck scars following thyroidectomy can negatively impact patient quality of life. Transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy can reduce postoperative cosmetic burden. Methods: Prospective cohort study of patients seen between June 2018 and January 2019. Scar cosmesis was determined using the validated Scar Cosmesis Assessment and Rating (SCAR) scale and a Visual Analog Scale (VAS) measuring color, contour, and irregularity. Results: Eighty-one patients (80% female, mean age 43.7 years) were analyze… Show more

“…The scale used four subdomain scores to describe the scar. The VAS is a subjective scar evaluation tool with scores ranging from 0 (worst possible) to 10 (best possible) 32,33 . According to Kim's research, the VAS score appears to be more appropriate for the assessment of simple facial wounds because it is ready and easy to use and sensitive, and its results are reproducible 34 .…”

“…The VAS is a subjective scar evaluation tool with scores ranging from 0 (worst possible) to 10 (best possible). 32,33 According to Kim's research, the VAS score appears to be more appropriate for the assessment of simple facial wounds because it is ready and easy to use and sensitive, and its results are reproducible. 34 Our study supports that BTXA can significantly improve the appearance of CL/P scars on the VAS score and reduce the width of scars, although the results showed no significant differences between an experimental group and a control group assessed by the VSS.…”

“…The transoral approach avoids external skin incisions and resultant potential complications such as granulomas, fistulas, and bleeding [ 20 , 35 ]. Further, the transoral approach offers a superior cosmetic outcome with no exterior scar that is becoming increasingly popularized, as seen in thyroidectomies, when comparing new transoral approaches with conventional trans-cervical ones [ 36 ]. Secondarily, TOTS ties the two ends of the suspension string together without the need of a screw.…”

“…Endoscopic thyroidectomy has excellent cosmetic effects in patients with thyroid cancer who desire to avoid visible scars on the anterior neck 1 . However, due to the learning curve, the rate of complications may be increased during the initial period of learning endoscopic thyroidectomy 2,3 .…”

“…Endoscopic thyroidectomy has excellent cosmetic effects in patients with thyroid cancer who desire to avoid visible scars on the anterior neck. 1 However, due to the learning curve, the rate of complications may be increased during the initial period of learning endoscopic thyroidectomy. 2,3 Hypoparathyroidism is one of the most common complications after total thyroidectomy, with an incidence rate of 30%-60% reported in the literature.…”
