Cosmetic Devices Based on Active Transdermal Technologies

Abstract: Active transdermal technology, commonly associated with drug delivery, has been used in recent years by the cosmetic industry for the aesthetic restoration of skin and delivery of cosmetic agents. In this article, we provide an overview of the skin's structure, various skin types, skin's self-repair mechanisms that are stimulated from the usage of cosmetic devices and discuss cosmetic applications. Summaries of the most common active transdermal technologies such as microneedles, iontophoresis, sonophoresis, l… Show more

“…In long-term daily use, moisturizers may either improve skin barrier function, and consequently increase penetration of active ingredients, in this case polyphenols (Filipović et al, 2016). Hyaluronic acid, a natural component of the skin located in the extracellular matrix, probably recovered lost skin moisture and gives the visual effect of skin lifting (Scott and Banga, 2015). Creams contained components of natural wetting factors of skin and elastin.…”

“…MNs puncture the stratum corneum without coming in contact with the underlying nerve fibers and blood vessels, present primarily in the dermis, resulting in a pain-free and minimally invasive means of delivering both small and large molecular weight, hydrophilic as well as lipophilic actives, without side effects at the application site [17,23]. Several MN devices have already obtained FDA clearance, primarily for cosmetic applications, such as DermaRoller ® (DermaRoller ® GmbH, Wolfenbüttel, Germany), Dermapen ® (EquipMED ™ , Belrose, Australia) and Revive ™ HAP (AMIEA MED, Berlin, Germany) [17,24]. MNs are frequently employed in cosmetic clinics for several conditions like scar reduction post-acne, burn treatment, cellulite reduction, hair restoration, hyperpigmentation, and melasma recovery [24][25][26].…”

MNs cause percutaneous collagen induction for dermal repair and are also applied as a pre-treatment to enhance the penetration of topically applied cosmeceutical actives [24][25][26][27][28][29].…”

“…To reach the skin cells, however, the chemicals have to pass through the stratum corneum, which acts as highly resistant lipid barrier to penetration of foreign molecules into the skin [ 8 ]. Therefore in both the pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields, significant efforts have been put forth in attempts to overcome the barrier of the stratum corneum in order to deliver topically functional agents into the skin.…”
