Cosmetic commentary: Is bakuchiol the new "skincare hero"?

Abstract: Bakuchiol is a new trendy ingredient in cosmetic skincare products, claiming to have similar efficacy to over‐the‐counter vitamin A derivative products. The manufacturers use clinical trial data to support the claims that bakuchiol has anti‐aging properties. This commentary critically appraises these clinical trials. Dermatologists need to be aware of and clinically appraise evidence for these types of cosmetic ingredients in order to provide accurate recommendations to their patients and the consumer. The int… Show more

“…Bakuchiol, the natural substitute for retinol, is a plant based natural compound playing a significant role in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry without leaving any side effects. 12 The properties such as anti-ageing, anti-pigmentation, anti-acne, anti-cancer, hepatoprotective, cardioprotective, hypoglycemic, hypolipemic, and antidepressant, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities makes bakuchiol a superior component in both areas of cosmetology and pharmacology. 11 d ,18 b As mentioned earlier, bakuchiol is known to be functionally similar to retinol but do not have any structural similarities.…”

“… 11 Bakuchiol is found to have no or little side effects when compared to retinoids, thus replacing the latter from the place of top anti-ageing molecule. 12 This evidence suggests that bakuchiol has potential for further development, application and research.…”

“…Cosmetics containing retinol can cause adverse effects such as redness, itching, burning, dryness, increased skin cell turnover, increased perspiration, hair loss, or photosensitivity. However, these adverse effects have not been observed with the use of bakuchiol, which is gentler on the skin, causing minimal irritation and allergic reactions [1,55]. Furthermore, compared to retinol, bakuchiol exhibits greater photochemical stability and ease of formulation with emollients and solubilizers [64].…”

“…As oxidative and inflammatory stresses are closely related to cutaneous ageing, their prevention by bakuchiol might promote the overall skin condition. However, the quality of the current scientific evidence has recently been critically appraised [31]. In this context, we determined the (i) antioxidative and (ii) anti‐inflammatory capacities of bakuchiol and retinol and examined their ability to improve the cellular metabolism and synthesis of growth factor 7 summarized as (iii) cell activity.…”
