Cosmeceuticals for hyperpigmentation: What is available?

Abstract: Cosmeceuticals are topical cosmetic-pharmaceutical hybrids that enhance the beauty through constituents that provide additional health-related benefit. Cosmeceuticals are commonly used for hyperpigmentation. These disorders are generally difficult to treat, hence the need for skin lightening agents including, cosmeceuticals. These agents selectively target hyperplastic melanocytes and inhibit key regulatory steps in melanin synthesis. With the recent safety concern regarding use of hydroquinone, the need for a… Show more

“…This result agrees with reports by other researchers concerning the prevalent use of hydroquinone by cosmetic formulators [17]. This may also be attributed to the fact that this chemical has been known to have skin de-pigmenting properties for a longer period of time than the others; or as a result of the fact that it is known to have no permanent effect if used at the proper level [20] recommended by regulatory bodies. It could also be that the chemical was used as an antioxidant as it can act in such a capacity as well [46].…”

“…Mequinol (4-hydroxyl anisole) is a derivative of hydroquinone that acts as a substrate for tyrosinase, inhibiting formation of melanin precursors [20]. The mechanism of action of this inhibition which results in de-pigmenting of the skin is unclear.…”

“…The newly formulated herbomineral test formulation was studied to investigate the role on skin depigmentation. For comparison purpose, the kojic acid (10 mM) was used as positive control in this assay, which was extensively used as a skin whitening compound in many cosmetic products [40]. The cellular content of melanin was reduced by 12.49%, 6.7%, and 8.79% in the UT-DMEM + BT-Test formulation, BT-DMEM + UTTest formulation, and BT-DMEM + BT-Test formulation groups, respectively at 0.06 µg/mL with respect to the UT-DMEM + UT-Test formulation group.…”
