Cosmeceuticals and silibinin

Abstract: Cosmeceuticals are used for nourishing as well as improving the appearance of the skin, and are also documented as effective agents for treating various dermatologic conditions. Cosmeceutical preparations from herbal origin are most popular among consumers, as these agents are mostly nontoxic and possess strong antioxidant activity. Since oxidative stress is one of the major mechanisms for skin aging and dermatological conditions, the phytochemicals, such as silibinin, with proven antioxidant activity, could b… Show more

“…Silibinin also has a number of potential mechanisms that could benefit the skin. These include chemoprotective effects from environmental toxins, anti-inflammatory effects, protection from UV induced photocarcinogenesis, protection from sunburn, protection from UVBinduced epidermal hyperplasia, and DNA repair for UV induced DNA damage (double strand breaks) (Singh et al, 2009).…”

“…Antioxidants are radical scavengers which provide protection to the human body against free radicals by inhibiting various oxidizing chain reactions. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated exogenously react with various biomolecules present in the skin and play important role in skin disorders (Yamakoshi et al, 2003;Singh and Agarwal, 2009). …”
