Corynebacterium Striatum, an Emerging Nosocomial Pathogen: Case Reports

Abstract: : Corynebacterium striatum is an emerging nosocomial pathogen capable of causing a variety of infections in immunocompromised and hospitalized patients. We describe three cases of infection by C. striatum that were initially considered as contamination. Clinical suspicion in the wake of predisposing factors and accurate identification, using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) were key to implicate this commensal bacteria as a cause of infection.

“…To the best of our knowledge, there are no previous reports of isolated Corynebacterium tuberculostearicum mediated CIED infection . Corynebacterium striatum is an emerging multidrug resistant nosocomial pathogen capable of causing a variety of infections in immunocompromised and hospitalized patients 41,42 . Corynebacterium striatum has been associated with both native and prosthetic valve endocarditis and bone and joint infections 43,44,45 .…”

“…We report here the first deep septic thrombophlebitis and bacteraemia superimposed by multidrug-resistant Corynebacterium striatum in France. The increasing uses of invasive devices, aggressive antimicrobial therapies and immunosuppressive treatments can only lead to these types of nosocomial infections [3, 25]. In the absence of a consensus on the general recommendations to treat C.…”

The increasing uses of invasive devices, aggressive antimicrobial therapies and immunosuppressive treatments can only lead to these types of nosocomial infections [3,25]. In the absence of a consensus on the general recommendations to treat C. striatum septic deep thrombophlebitis, we suggest that treatment should associate the removal of the medical device with at least 4-6 weeks of susceptibility-directed antibiotic treatment, starting with vancomycin, or daptomycin used in biantibiotherapy, and 6 weeks of anticoagulation therapy.…”

“…To provide an example of the feasibility of B-AMP for in silico evaluation of AMPs with anti-biofilm potential, we present a case study using the emerging pathogen Corynebacterium striatum . C. striatum is a multidrug resistant, biofilm-forming pathogen, increasingly associated with a range of wound, skin and eye infections ( Watkins et al., 1993 ; Wong et al., 2010 ; Alibi et al., 2017 ; McMullen et al., 2017 ; Nudel et al., 2018 ; Datta et al., 2021 ). In C. striatum , the sortase-pilin machinery is known to be important for biofilm formation, encoding the pilus-specific sortase C enzyme ( de Souza et al., 2015 ).…”
