“…This finding might support the notion that the fully differentiated cells lose the ability to divide through mitosis (HEIDENHAIN, 1911;RUSCH, 1954). However, many reports have been published indicating the possibility to undergo mitosis for well differentiated cells of various types of tissues such as adenohypophyseal cells (ALLANSON et al, 1969;KUROSUMI and KOBAYASHI, 1966;ZAMBRANO and DEIS, 1970;KUROSUMI, 1971), pancreatic islets (LIKE and CHICK, 1969), smooth muscle cells (COBB and BENNETT, 1970), parotid gland (REDMAN and SREEBNY, 1970), non-neoplastic melanocytes (JIMBOW et al, 1975) and thyroid follicular cells (ZELIGS and WOLLMAN, 1979).…”

“…In the adenohypophysis, however, some researchers as a result of light microscopy have been aware of the fact that fully differentiated secretory cells may multiply through mitosis (ALLANSON et al, 1969). By electron microscopy KUROSUMI and KOBAYASHI (1966) in ACTH cells and ZAMBRANO and DEIS (1970) in prolactin cells demonstrated mitotic figures in the cells containing secretory granules. The author also observed by electron microscopy many types of anterior pituitary cells undergoing mitosis, and demonstrated an ultrastructural feature of formation of immature secretory granules in the Golgi apparatus at the metaphase of mitosis in a growth hormone-producing cell (KUROSUMI, 1971).…”

“…According to KUXOSUMI andKOBAYASHI (1966) andNAKANE (1970), the ACTHmeter, PERDUE and MCSHAN (1966) reported that the isolated granules possessed ACTH-cell thus markedly differ from those of the ACTH-cell in mammalia.…”

“…In the case of animals successively given metopirone for 5 days, the profiles of in Rana esculenta (QUATTRINI, 1960;DUPONT, 1967DUPONT, , 1968, Rana temporaria (KEMENADE and DONGEN, 1967;KEMENADE, 1969a, b;LARSEN et al 1971). Using the electron microscope, the corticotroph cell was identified by several authors in various mammals; rat (FARQUHAR, 1957;HERLANT and KLASTERSKY, 1963;SIPERSTEIN and ALLISON, 1965;KUROSUMI and KOBAYASHI, 1966;KUROSUMI and OOTA, 1966;NAKAYAMA et al, 1969;NAKANE, 1970;PELLETIER, 1970;SIPERSTEIN and MILLER, 1970;PELLETIER and RACADOT, 1971), mouse (YAMADA and YAMASHITA, 1967), human (FONCIN and LE BEAU, 1964).…”

“…Morphological criteria to identify the ACTH secreting cells are still under controversy, notwithstanding the numerous cytological and immunohistochemical investigations (Kurosumi and Kobayashi, 1966;Breistedt, 1968;Siperstein and Miller, 1970;Phifer et al, 1970;Nakane, 1970;Baker et al, 1970;Pelletier and Racadot, 1971;Stefan and Dubois, 1972;Moriarty and Halmi, 1972;Stoeckel et al, 1973;Moon et al, 1973 andErkokcak, 1973 in the maximal diameter, there appeared some other type of acidophils initiating the transformation within 6 days (A in Fig.8). Kurosumi and Kobayashi (1966) are infrequently detected (K in Fig.8 …”
