Cortical and white matter correlates of language‐learning aptitudes

Abstract: People learn new languages with varying degrees of success but what are the neuroanatomical correlates of the difference in language-learning aptitude? In this study, we set out to investigate how differences in cortical morphology and white matter microstructure correlate with aptitudes for vocabulary learning, phonetic memory, and grammatical inferencing as measured by the first-language neutral LLAMA test battery. We used ultra-high field (7T) magnetic resonance imaging to estimate the cortical thickness an… Show more

“…DKI might be used to map diffusion properties related to tissue microstructure from language-related white matter tracts. Negative correlations were observed between scores for phonetic memory and MK, axial kurtosis, and radial kurtosis of the left superior longitudinal fasciculus III, which are tracts connecting cortical areas important for phonological working memory ( 22 ). An increasing motor activity level was also positively correlated with MK in the inferior, medial and superior longitudinal fasciculus, the corpus callosum and the posterior cingulum in schizophrenia.…”

“…The 0.8 mm isotropic resolution protocol was previously used in a separate work to study correlations between cortical morphology and language-learning aptitude [ 19 ]. From the underlying subject population of this work, a subset of 10 randomly chosen volunteers (7 female, 22 ± 1.9 years old) were used to examine the inter-subject variability of the normalized MPRAGE images.…”

“…Psychological factors are also factors that have a strong influence on early childhood reading skills (Getie, 2020). These factors include motivation, children's interest in books (Capellini & Germano, 2015), letters and other language symbols, and the child's selfadjusting attitude (Novén et al, 2021).…”
