Corruption research: A need for an integrated approach

Abstract: This article reviews the main corruption literature trends and theoretical foundations and points out the challenges of existing explanations of corruption. The emphasis on broad national-level variables limits our understanding of corruption and anti-corruption processes at the local level. Corruption studies also suffer from the bias of focusing on developing countries and nation-states. These shortcomings can be remedied by using an integrated approach to studying corruption in western countries and cities.

“…The problem of corruption is not only a problem in practice but also a problem in theory. Often agency theory (i.e., principal-agent problems) provides a theoretical basis for corruption research (e.g., Zimelis, 2020;Simmonds et al, 2016;Jansics, 2014). However, this theory would then limit the scope of research to the analysis of individuals in organization / management.…”

“…Some of the following definitions of corruption can be reviewed that the most common definition of corruption revolves around the rules guiding public officials in their public duties. Under this definition, behavior becomes corrupt when it deviates from the official rules for the sake of private interests or monetary gains (Zimelis, 2020). Meanwhile, another definition suggests that: corruption…”

“…High-quality institutions that promote accountability curtail rent-seeking politicians by making such activities difficult or impractical for any rational actor to undertake. Conversely, poor-quality institutions enable politicians to undermine economic development through corruption, patronage spending and rent-seeking activities (Robinson et al, 2006; Zimelis, 2020). Thus, the accountability created by well-functioning political institutions could explain the diverging experiences of resource-abundant states.…”
