There is a continuous decline in the performance of medical insurance companies in Zimbabwe resulting in these companies failing to meet their obligations to stakeholders as seen by failure to pay wages, policy holders' medical bills and dividends to shareholders. While research shows Hunhu/Ubuntu as a requirement for ethical practices that bring about good business and moral practices, it does not show how Hunhu/Ubuntu influences stakeholders, employee behaviour and organizational performance. Due to this glaring gap, the study was designed to investigate: the causes of unethical behaviour in the medical insurance industry, the attributes of African Humanism and how it influences people's behaviour in medical insurance firms. A case study research design was used where both quantitative and qualitative methodologies were employed. Closed and open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted. Chi-square tests were used for data analysis. Findings of the study show that Hunhu/Ubuntu moulds good behaviour and is essential for avoiding risky behaviour which curtails organizational performance.

Several studies on democracy and political risk (see, e.g., Gleditsch and Hegre (1997); Hegre, Ellingsen, Gates, and Gleditsch (2001); Reynal-Querol (2002a,b); and Rock (2009) and their references) have observed that the semi-democracies are more prone to conflicts, corruption and other political risks than full democracies and autocracies. This reflects that the semi-democracies, unlike full democracies and full autocracies, have not yet established strong institutions that might prevent protests and other anti-government activities, which makes these countries more vulnerable to political instabilities.…”

This study examines the impacts of democracy and political risk on stock market. Using annualized panel data for 49 emerging markets for 2000-2012 we find evidence that democracy and political risk do have impact on stock market returns and the relationship between democracy and political risk is parabolic i.e., there is a threshold level of democracy after which political risk begins to decline. Our also results suggest that decreases in political risk lead to higher returns.JEL classification: G15, G12, F52

Autocrats and Skyscrapers: Modern White Elephants in Dictatorships

Political leaders often have private incentives to pursue expensive and socially wasteful "white elephant" projects. Our argument highlights that weak accountability mechanisms allow autocratic leaders to more easily realize such projects, whereas democratic leaders are more constrained from doing so. We subsequently test different implications from this argument by drawing on a global dataset recording various features of skyscrapers, a prominent type of modern white elephant. We find that autocracies systematically build more new skyscrapers than democracies, and this result is robust to controlling for income level, state control over the economy, and country-and year-fixed effects. Further, autocratic skyscrapers are more excessive and wasteful than democratic. Autocratic regimes also pursue skyscraper projects no matter if they preside over rural or urban societies. In contrast, skyscrapers are fewer and -when first built -associated with less waste in democracies, and they are more frequently built urbanized democracies than in rural. * We thank Sindre Haugen for excellent research assistance.
