The composite hydrogels were produced using the solution casting method due to the non-toxic and biocompatible nature of chitosan (CS)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA). The best composition was chosen and crosslinked with tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), after which different amounts of graphene oxide (GO) were added to develop composite hydrogels. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle was used to analyze the hydrogels. The samples were also evaluated for swelling abilities in various mediums. The drug release profile was studied in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) at a pH of 7.4. To predict the mechanism of drug release, the data were fitted into kinetic models. Finally, antibacterial activity and cell viability data were obtained. FTIR studies revealed the successful synthesis of CS/PVA hydrogels and GO/CS/PVA in hydrogel composite. SEM showed no phase separation of the polymers, whereas AFM showed a decrease in surface roughness with an increase in GO content. 100 µL of crosslinker was the critical concentration at which the sample displayed excellent swelling and preserved its structure. Both the crosslinked and composite hydrogel showed good swelling. The most acceptable mechanism of drug release is diffusion-controlled, and it obeys Fick’s law of diffusion for drug released. The best fitting of the zero-order, Hixson-Crowell and Higuchi models supported our assumption. The GO/CS/PVA hydrogel composite showed better antibacterial and cell viability behaviors. They can be better biomaterials in biomedical applications.

Graphene is a potential reinforcing material for polymeric materials due to high aspect ratio, surface area, electrical and mechanical properties. In this work thermally reduced graphene oxide (TRGO)/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) composites were developed using combined solution mixing and melt mixing techniques. The effect of wt. % of pristine graphite and TRGO on the mechanical and thermal properties of composites was studied. Graphene oxide (GO) was prepared from graphite powder using improved Hummersʹ method followed by thermal reduction to obtain TRGO. Characterization of GO, TRGO and asdeveloped ABS composites was performed using Fourier Transmission Infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, differential scanning calorimetery and thermo gravimetric analysis. Tensile properties were determined by testing injection molded dumbbell shaped samples. The results showed that tensile properties of TRGO/ABS composites increased significantly at 0.2 wt. % loading compared to corresponding graphite/ABS composites. However, increased content of both fillers decreased mechanical properties of the composites. TRGO, at 0.2 wt. % loading, increased glass transition temperature of ABS by ca.7 °C. TRGO neither increased nor decreased thermal stability of ABS composites. This study showed that combined solution and melt mixing technique can significantly improve dispersion of TRGO in ABS matrix.

We explored the potential of heteroatom-doped graphene oxide (GO)-based electrodes for energy storage. Binder-free electrodes were synthesized using the hydrothermal method, where doping of GO and its electrode development was achieved simultaneously in one step. GO was doped with nitrogen (NGO) and boron (BGO) using urea and boric acid as nitrogen (N) and boron (B) sources, respectively. In addition, GO was also co-doped with B and N (BNGO). The atomic percentages of nitrogen and boron in NGO and BGO were found out to be 6.13% and 17.94%, respectively, as revealed by XPS. The BNGO had atomic percentages of boron and nitrogen as 23.76% and 3.64%, respectively. Electrodes were electrochemically characterized in 3 M KOH electrolyte by employing cyclic voltammetry (CV), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD). CV analysis revealed that NGO and BNGO exhibited superior charge storage capacity with a high specific capacitance of 855 and 811 F g À1 , respectively, at 1 m Vs À1 . CV data were further analyzed to identify and quantify charge storage mechanism, and it suggested that binder-free-doped electrodes exhibited diffusioncontrolled charge storage as dominant behavior. Thus, our results demonstrate an approach to dope GO and develop high-performance, binder-free electrodes for supercapacitor applications in a facile single-step hydrothermal method.
