The objective of the present study was to introduce a cost‐effective and environmentally friendly coating to improve the corrosion resistance of the structures located in salt water. The coating solution, based on amorphous aluminum phosphate composition, was synthesized by sol–gel process and applied to AISI 304 stainless steel by dip coating technique. X‐ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy analyses were employed to investigate the phase composition and morphology of the coating. Corrosion behavior of the uncoated and coated samples was investigated using standard salt spray test, potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution. Salt spray test results for the bare substrate revealed a corrosion rate of six‐time greater than that of the coated surface after 168 hr exposure time. Electrochemical test results declared that the amorphous AlPO4 coating decreased the corrosion current density of the AISI 304 stainless steel by 10 orders of magnitude. Furthermore, according to the corresponding EIS measurements, the coated surface exhibited a superior anti‐corrosion performance than uncoated sample. Overall, the results declared that the amorphous AlPO4 coating could be a good choice for surface protection of stainless steel against electrochemical corrosion in salty environments.

High-temperature-resistant adhesive is a critical material in the aerospace field. The zirconium-modified aluminum phosphate-based adhesive developed in this work had the advantage of adjustable thermal expansibility, achieving a high matching of CTE with alumina. The introduction of zirconium can significantly improve the thermal stability of the adhesive matrix, and the Zr/Al ratio substantially affects the various reaction processes inside the adhesive, especially the types of zirconium-containing compounds. Only when the mass ratio of zirconium hydroxide to aluminum hydroxide was 3:7, most of the zirconium-containing compounds in A7Z3 adhesive were ZrO2, which was the key reason it had the highest CTE. The room-temperature bonding strength of A7Z3 after heat treatment at 1500℃ reached 67.2 MPa. After pre-treatment at 1500℃, the hightemperature bonding strength of A7Z3 was above 50 MPa in the range of RT-1000℃. After 40 thermal cycles between RT and 1500℃, the bonding strength still reached 10 MPa. Physical bonding worked at temperatures below 1000℃, while chemical bonding dominated above 1000℃ based on the generation of Al5BO9 and mullite on the interfaces.

Epoxy nanocomposite coatings are an essential way to protect petroleum storage tanks from corrosion. For this purpose, the new nanocomposite epoxy coatings (P-M/epoxy composites) have been successfully designed. The P-M/epoxy composites are based on the metal vanadium oxy-phosphate M0.5VOPO4 (where M = Mg, Ni, and Zn). The function of P-M/epoxy composites as anti-corrosion coatings was explored using electrochemical and mechanical tests. Using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), it has been noticed that the pore resistance and polarization resistance of the P-M/epoxy composites remain higher as compared to the neat epoxy. The P-M/epoxy composites have the greatest impact on the cathodic dis-bonded area and water absorption. Besides, P-M/epoxy composites exhibit a very high order of mechanical properties. Further, Mg0.5VOPO4 has the greatest effect on the anti-corrosion properties of epoxy coating followed by Zn0.5VOPO4 and Ni0.5VOPO4. All these properties lead to developing effective anti-corrosion coatings. Thus, the net result from this research work is highly promising and provides a potential for future works on the anti-corrosion coating.
