Corrosion Resistance of Cordierite-Modified Light MMCs

Abstract: Composites are one of the fastest developing materials. Research is particularly intensive in case of light metal alloys due to i.a. economic and environmental aspects. One of the innovative solutions is production of the metal matrix composites (MMC) by adding the cordierite ceramics obtained from fly ashes to magnesium alloys. In addition to obtaining new-generation materials with improved mechanical properties, also the waste is utilized which has a significant environmental and economic importance. In orde… Show more

“…Electrochemical tests, like open circuit potential (OCP) variation with time and potentiodynamic polarization, were performed using an Autolab PGSTAT128N potentiostat/galvanostat and NOVA software (Metrohm Autolab B.V., Utrecht, The Netherlands). Measurements were carried out in a 3.5% NaCl solution at ambient temperature according to the methodology described by Szewczyk-Nykiel et al [32].…”

“…The electrochemical tests were carried out using the potentiostat-galvanostat 0531 UI&IA produced by the Atlas Company. Analysis was performed in 0.5 mol H 2 SO 4 solution under atmospheric pressure and at room temperature (21°C) using the measuring system described in Szewczyk-Nykiel et al (2017). Tests were carried out after 20 min of exposure of the sintered samples to ensure stabilisation of the corrosion potential (Ecorr).…”

“…The key factor, however, is the volumetric share of the phase formed and the place and distribution of its crystallization [7,8]. When the β-phase (Mg 17 Al 12 ) possesses a continuous nature and is finely divided, the corrosion resistance increases [9]. On the other hand, when Mg 17 Al 12 formed as intergranular precipitates, microgalvanic cathodes occur, decreasing the corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys [10].…”
